NASCAR has revealed photos of the pull-down rope tied into a noose that was found in driver Bubba Wallace’s garage stall on Sunday (June 21).

“What we saw was a symbol of hate in the garage,” NASCAR president Steve Phelps said during a press conference on Thursday (June 25).

After an investigation into the incident by the FBI, the agency found that the noose had been hanging in the stall since last October. Due to this, they determined that no federal crime was committed against Wallace, the only Black driver in NASCAR’s top circuit.

“It’s been an emotional few days. First off, I want to say how relieved I am that the investigation revealed that this wasn’t what we feared it was,” Wallace tweeted earlier this week.

“I want to thank my team, NASCAR and the FBI for acting swiftly and treating this as a real threat. I think we’ll gladly take a little embarrassment over that the alternatives that could have been. Make no mistake, though some will try, this should not detract from the show of unity we had on Monday, and the progress we’ve made as a sport to be a more welcoming environment for all.”

During Thursday’s press conference (June 25), Phelps revealed that in the days since the noose was discovered, NASCAR has inspected their 1,600-plus garage stalls at racing tracks across the country. Only 11 of the stalls had pull-down ropes that had been tied into a knot and only the rope in Wallace’s stall had been fashioned into a noose.

“Anyone who would suggest this was a hoax, I find personally offensive,” Phelps added. “I don’t know how people think that way.”

After the FBI investigation, Wallace appeared on CNN and told reporter Don Lemon that the rope in his stall was “a straight up noose.”

“It was a noose whether tied in 2019 or whatever,” he said. “It was a noose. Wasn’t directed at me, but somebody tied a noose.”
