As we all continue to participate in the fight against systematic oppression, it’s becoming more obvious that Black women aren’t receiving the protection and safety that they deserve. As such, Noname delivers a new track titled “Song 33,” which sees production from legendary beatsmith Madlib and sees the Chicago artist speaking out on the matter on the minute-long cut:

“…n***as in the back quiet as a church mouse, basement studio when duty calls to get the verse out/

I guess the ego hurt now It’s time to go to work, wow, look at him go, he really ‘bout to write about me when the world is in smokes?/

When it’s people in trees? When George was beggin’ for his mother, saying he couldn’t breathe, you thought to write about me?/”

Noname has been one of the most vocal artists on social media in regards to the current uprising that is taking place following the recent deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others who are losing their lives at the hands of law enforcement. Prior to the demonstrations, she’s also been actively educating her community through her increasingly popular book club.

Last year, Noname appeared on “The Daily Show,” where she further explained her reason for creating said book club to the show’s host Trevor Noah:

“[My mom] owned a book store in Chicago for 20 years, it was called Afrocentric Bookstore. That’s how I grew up… We’re trying to incentivize people to shop locally. Yes, you can participate in the book club online, but we really encourage our readers to shop at these POC-owned bookstores that we have in our directory. It’s a little bit of a f*** you to Amazon and kind of a f*** you to the FBI… COINTELPRO and what they did to destroy black bookstores.”
