Sybrina Fulton, the mother of the late Trayvon Martin, has announced that she is fully qualified to run for Miami Dade County Commissioner District 1. “I’m officially qualified to run for Miami Dade County Commissioner District 1. #ItsTimeForChange #YourVoteYourVoice #ItsanewdayinMiamiDadeCounty #PositiveVibesOnly http://SybrinaFulton.com,” she tweeted.

According to her website, Fulton is “an active member of the community who has dedicated her adult life to public service, empowering women, and fighting for positive social change.” Her top priorities are transportation, economic opportunity and housing affordability. In addition to addressing gun violence, Fulton says that she plans on fighting increasing crime in the district. She will also tackle issues pertaining to the elderly and mental illness.

She has been endorsed by Sen. Cory Booker and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Last month, Clinton held a virtual fundraiser for her.

Martin was just 17 years old when he was fatally shot in 2012 by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, as he walked home from a local store. His case sparked national outrage after Zimmerman was acquitted on the basis of Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law. His acquittal led to protests throughout the country. Martin’s death helped spark the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

For the past eight years, Fulton has advocated for gun control reforms. According to The Hill, she launched the Trayvon Martin Foundation and the Circle of Mothers, an organization to help empower mothers and other women who lose family members to gun violence.

“At first I didn’t want to be the voice for Trayvon after he died,” Fulton said last year. “But, I decided I have no choice. Now I am called to act and called to serve. I did not drop to my knees for too long, because I refused to be depressed. I stood up. When my son got shot down, I stood up. And I’m still standing.”
