Miguel has joined the long list of celebrities that have paid tribute to George Floyd, a black man who died at the hands of police brutality in Minneapolis earlier this week.
As part of #CokeStudioSessions, the singer delivered a worthwhile performance. At one point, Miguel laid face down on the ground with his hands behind his back in a similar fashion to Floyd. In addition to that, Miguel crooned lyrics about the injustices that minorities face on a daily basis, which were also featured on his 2012 album Kaleidoscope Dream. “Hey, I say we’re all created equal/ That’s what they teach us/ But that ain’t how we treat each other/ Naw, that ain’t how we treat each other/ Sh—, the truth is that we need each other, yea,” he said during his segment.
In addition to his performance, Miguel also shared his thoughts on Instagram. The Afro-Mexican artist reposted a tweet explaining that ex-officer Derek Chauvin had been taken into custody following the tragic incident. For his caption, the “Sure Thing” musician encouraged his fans to take action. “Officer Chauvin has been arrested . Now, we want ALL the rest of the officers involved arrested. AND convicted,” he wrote.
Like Miguel, Kirk Franklin will honor Floyd during his “VERZUZ” battle that is set to take place on Sunday (May 31). In a post to Instagram, Franklin revealed his upcoming plans. “For George, Breonna and Ahmaud….this Sunday 5pm EST on @verzuztv 🙏🏾💔@realfredh @bishopjakes,” he wrote. After opening up about his idea, fans praised the singer for bringing light during times of uncertainty.
Miguel’s participation in #CokeStudioSessions marks one of his many virtual performances amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in March, he took part in a Instagram Live concert, which partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Citizen’s “Together, at Home” series.
