Megan Thee Stallion made her first appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend and during her “Savage” performance, she called out Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron for the way he handled the case of Breonna Taylor.
The statement, “Protect Black women” was emblazoned in black and white on her stage set as she showed off her dance moves to her viral TikTok hit.
Mid-performance, faux gunshots rang out before Malcolm X’s famed speech about the tribulations Black women face began to play as well as a few other sound bytes including a quote from social justice activist Tamika Mallory, who said, “Daniel Cameron is no different than the sell-out negroes that sold our people into slavery.”
Megan then pulled the microphone to her face and delivered a powerful speech of her own about Black women.
“We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women because at the end of the day we need our Black women,” Megan said. “We need to protect our Black men and stand up for our Black men because at the end of the day, we’re tired of seeing hashtags of our Black men.”
Cameron has faced harsh criticism ever since the grand jury in the Breonna Taylor case indicted only one Louisville police officer, Brett Hankison, on three counts of “wanton endangerment” due to putting her neighbors in danger. The indictment had nothing to do with Taylor’s murder.
One grand juror sued the state of Kentucky for the courts to release the jury transcripts. On Friday (Oct. 2), 15 hours of audio from the trial was released to the public. The unidentified juror is also seeking the right to speak openly about the case.
Court docs state that Cameron’s comments don’t align with the information the jury received during deliberation and accuse the attorney general of using the jurors as a “shield.”
Cardi B also called out Cameron for the contradictory information he allegedly provided the grand jury following the release of the ballistics report last month. Megan Thee Stallion is just one of the latest stars to call him out.
