Black Panther has received a sequel release date. According to Variety, director Ryan Coogler announced when to expect the film at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. on Saturday (Aug. 24).

The sequel to the box office hit is set to arrive in theaters on May 6, 2020.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that Coogler has delivered a treatment for the highly anticipated follow-up, with a villain and new title, but there are no additional details at the moment.

“We’re not taking our time, we’re really trying to get it right,” Coogler said of the production schedule.

Variety reports that “Black Panther 2” is the furthest out announced Marvel film, between Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to be released on Nov. 5, 2021 and an unannounced film due out on July 29, 2022.

Black Panther, which stars Chadwick Boseman, premiered in February 2018. The film grossed $700 million in the U.S. and $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the second highest grossing Marvel movie of all time domestically, behind Avengers: Endgame.

Black Panther was also nominated for seven Oscar Awards, including best picture, which was the first for a Marvel superhero film. The movie took home three out of seven awards.

The Coogler-directed film also made history with a nearly all-black cast. Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Forrest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, and Angela Bassett starred in the film as well.

Following the release of Black Panther, Coogler penned an open letter reacting to the film’s box office success.

“Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong. It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film. But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters often moved me and my wife to tears,” he said in the letter, which was shared via social media.
