R. Kelly’s team appears to be in a bind, as they are reportedly scrambling to gather money to pay for Michael Jackson’s former lawyer, Tom Meserau, to represent him. According to TMZ, the R&B singer’s legal team has been reaching out for financial help to pay “what will become an enormous legal bill.”
Sources told the site that Kelly’s industry connections have been in touch with his team and are willing to help with his legal fees.
These industry contacts have reportedly agreed to help the singer anonymously, so that he can obtain Mesereau, the attorney who was able to get Michael Jackson acquitted in 2005 of child molestation charges. He also achieved a not guilty verdict for Robert Blake, who was accused of murdering his wife.
Kelly, however, has reached a fork in the road. The money being fundraised for his legal fees will not come in unless he terminates his current lawyer, Steven Greenberg.
TMZ also reports that the defense in Kelly’s New York federal case will require forensic experts, as well as experts in sex trafficking and private investigators. The case itself will easily cost $1 million dollars to defend.
It was previously reported that Kelly and Mesereau met for a four-hour meeting. At the time, Mesereau had not agreed to represent the singer, but it was said that the chances of Kelly obtaining him for legal representation was very likely.
The singer is facing sex crimes in Illinois State, Illinois Federal and Minnesota State, as well. On his Minnesota charges, Kelly is accused of paying a teenage girl to have sexual contact with him in a Minnesota hotel room in 2001. The alleged victim is said to be between the ages of 16 and 17 years old.
Kelly might also have charges in Detroit and Atlanta.
Fans of the singer have reached out to his team to inquire about contributing to Kelly’s legal fees.
