For those who have served our country, President Donald Trump is looking to return the favor.
“It was my honor to sign a Presidential Memorandum facilitating the cancellation of student loan debt for 25K of our most severely disabled Veterans. With today’s order, we express the everlasting love & loyalty of a truly grateful Nation. God bless our Vets, & God Bless America!” Trump wrote to Twitter.
Yesterday (Aug. 21), Trump signed an executive order that forgives all student loan debt for any permanently disabled U.S. military veteran. Following the signing, Trump delivered a speech at the American Veterans National Convention in Louisville, Ky. During his speech, Trump explained that he also cleared those eligible veterans from having to pay any federal income tax on loans.
“The debt of these disabled veterans will be completely erased,” Trump said. “That’s hundreds of millions of dollars of student loans debt for our disabled veterans that will be completely erased.” Currently, Americans hold around $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. The executive order in which Trump signed is reportedly expedited.
For the rest of his term, Trump has been vocal regarding changes he wishes to see. Last week, Trump suggested the creation of more mental institutions as a way to help with gun violence. The POTUS believes that these institutions will decrease the number of shootings reported each year.
“I think we have to start building institutions again because you know, if you look at the ’60s and the ’70s, so many of these institutions were closed, and the people were just allowed to go onto the streets. And that was a terrible thing for our country. … A lot of our conversation has to do with the fact that we have to open up institutions. We can’t let these people be on the streets,” he added.
