Congrats are in order for Lil Nas X. His breakthrough hit, “Old Town Road,” has spent 17 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track is officially the longest-running No. 1 in Billboard chart history. “Old Town Road” has broken the record first set by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” which ran for a total of 16 weeks.
The 20-year-old rapper has had a life-changing year and his accomplishments continue to roll out. Recently, his MTV Video Music Awards nominations were revealed. The 7 rapper is nominated for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Collaboration, Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Art Direction.
A few days ago, Lil Nas X expressed on Twitter how much his life has changed within a matter of a year. “Wow man last year i was sleeping on my sisters floor, had no money, struggling to get plays on my music, suffering from daily headaches, now i’m gay,” he wrote.
Back in May, Lil Nas X spoke with ABC’s Nightline regarding his rise to fame. “This is only the beginning. And you know people won’t realize that until they realize it,” the 20-year-old rapper said. “I knew for a fact that this song would take me to another level but … I can’t say I knew that it was going to be worldwide or nationwide.”
As his career continues to unfold, the Atlanta rapper wants to live his life authentically. While speaking with BBC , Lil Nas reiterated the importance of being as honest as possible with his fans. “I don’t want to just live my entire life, especially how I got to where I’m at, just not doing what I want to do,” he said. “I’m also, I feel like, opening the doors for more people.”
