The Weeknd has officially become the 23rd artist to receive a diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
According to Billboard, the Toronto singer’s 2015 hit single “The Hills” has sold over 10 million units since its release. “The Hills” is only the 29th single in the history of the RIAA’s 60-year gold and platinum program to reach diamond status.
“The Hills” became The Weeknd’s second No. 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 after dethroning his first No. 1 “Can’t Feel My Face.” The song spent six weeks at No. 1, and the video has garnered over 1.3 billion views on YouTube.
After the announcement, the “Starboy” singer took to Twitter to express his gratitude. “became a diamond selling artist today,” he wrote. “i’m nothing without my team.”
The Weeknd has been quiet on the music front since the released of 2016’s Starboy. Earlier this year, he teamed up with SZA and Travis Scott for the song “Power is Power” form the Game of Thrones compilation album. And on the business side, he became the first Toronto Defiant and Splyce global ambassador after investing in Esports Franchise Overactive Media back in April.
“As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project,” The Weeknd said in a statement obtained by Tech Crunch. “I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.”
Janelle Monáe has also joined the diamond-selling club. Fun’s “We Are Young,” featuring Monáe was certified diamond earlier this month.
