There appears to be an influx in the demand, as well as the available supply, for ownership of items previously belonging to various legends in hip hop.
Earlier this month, Madonna lost her appeal attempting to block the sale of a letter Tupac wrote to her over two decades ago, during which he ended their romantic relationship. Now, yet another item has made headlines as being something that collectors can soon add to their want list.
As reported by TMZ on Tuesday (June 25), another rare piece of Tupac memorabilia will soon be going up for auction. The item in question is the late rapper’s 1995 prison I.D., which is being made available for sale by Heritage Auctions.
Tupac, who died in 1996 at the age of 25, was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse in November 1993 stemming from an incident with a woman in a hotel room. The rapper served nine months of his 4.5-year sentence before Suge Knight posted his $1.4 million bail in exchange for his commitment to dropping three albums via Death Row Records. He was released in October 1995 after serving at the Clinton Correction Facility in Dannemora, New York.
As revealed in a scanned image of the I.D. card released by Heritage Auctions, the identification card includes Tupac’s mugshot, his signature and other details, such as his eye color, date of birth and weight. According to the date listed on the I.D., the card was issued on Feb. 28, 1995, just two weeks after beginning his sentence on Valentine’s Day. Additionally, the back of the card states that he was required to carry his I.D. with him “at all times” while in the facility.
Per TMZ, the card is anticipated to sell for $4,000-$6,000, with a starting bid of $2,000. The auction will open for bidding on July 1.
