The marathon continues. Last night (June 23), BET honored the late Nipsey Hussle with the Humanitarian Award at the 2019 BET Awards.
Before Nip’s family took center stage to accept the award on his behalf, T.I. spoke about Neighborhood Nip’s impact. He explained that his legacy will never be forgotten.
“He was revolutionary,” T.I. remembered. “His emphasis on the power of equity and ownership of our art led the charge of independence and created a blueprint for other kind of artists today to follow…He inspired people across the world while never abandoning the community and culture that raised him. It’s been nearly three months since we lost Nip and many are still discovering how legendary he really was.”
Lauren London was joined on stage by her and Nipsey’s two-year-old son, Kross, Nipsey and Tanisha Foster’s daughter Emani, Nipsey’s mother Angelique Smith, father Dawit Asghedom, grandmother Margaret Boutte, and London’s other son, Cameron Carter. While speaking into the microphone, London kept things short and sweet.
“Thank you guys for all the love and support,” London said to the crowd at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “The marathon continues again.”
Nipsey’s dad, Dawit, thanked BET for all of their efforts to remember his son.
“I wish my son could be here,” he said. “Thank you BET. He wanted to be here so badly, and last year he made it to perform here and we were so happy for him. And you recognize him and we appreciate that.”
Throughout the night, BET continuously honored The Victory Lap rapper. This year, BET featured a blue carpet as the color is synonymous with the slain artist. DJ Khaled and John Legend also performed “Higher,” which is a collaborative hit that features King Nip.
