Twenty-eight-year-old rising UK rapper Cadet died in a car accident early Saturday (Feb. 9) morning in England, according to authorities.

Staffordshire Police confirmed on Facebook that Cadet — real name Blaine Cameron Johnson — was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities after the vehicle he was in collided with a van at 1:30 am local time. The other three passengers in the car with him were taken to the hospital for injury treatment. He was reportedly taking a taxi to a performance at Keele University.

Following the news going public, his family released a statement on his private Instagram account. “We, the family of Blaine Cameron Johnson known as Cadet (Underrated Legend), would like to share the sad news that during the early hours of 9 February 2019 he passed away as a passenger in a taxi, en route to a performance,” the statement said. “Right now we the family appreciate your patience and will share with you any information as and when we can. Thanks for your support in advance.”

Several UK artists including Biz, Ms. Banks and his cousin Krept paid their respects on social media. “My life will never be the same again.” Krept tweeted. “I love you and will forever miss you. I can’t believe it. I am heartbroken. Rest in peace cuz. You finally started getting the recognition you deserved. I’m so proud of you.”

Cadet was expected to perform at the Wireless Festival in London later this year. In a tweet following the announcement of his death, the festival said they will not replace Cadet on the lineup and keep the time slot “as a time to reflect on the memory of Blaine.”

Outside of his freestyle videos, Cadet was best known for his work with his cousin’s group, Krept and Konan.

“Officers from the Staffordshire and West Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the incident,” authorities said on Facebook. His management is expected to release an official statement after “more details emerge.”
