Kid Cudi recently sat down with Jada Pinkett Smith, participating in an introspective conversation for the actress’ Red Table Talk series. While the episode has not yet been aired in full, a new trailer sheds some insight into the topics the pair discussed.
During the forthcoming episode, which is set to debut on Monday (Dec. 17) on Facebook Live, the Kids See Ghosts artist explains how he previously was ashamed to talk openly about his mental health.
“I was really good at keeping my troubles hidden… even from my friends,” Cudi shared, speaking with co-hosts Jada, Adrienne Banfield-Jones and Willow Smith. “I really was good with that. And it’s scary because you hear people say, ‘I had no clue.’”
After Willow weighed in, touching on how people internalizing their struggles can have an effect on others, Cudi elaborated further.
“I really went out of my way to keep what I was going through hidden because I was ashamed,” he added.
In October 2016, Cudi checked into a rehab facility for treatment of “depression and suicidal urges.” He revealed to his fans what he had been going through, lending some insight into what led to his decision to seek professional help.
“I am not at peace,” he wrote, addressing fans in an open letter at the time. “I haven’t been since you’ve known me. If I didn’t come here, I would’ve done something to myself. I simply am a damaged human swimming in a pool of emotions every day of my life. There’s a raging violent storm inside of my heart at all times. Idk what peace feels like. Idk how to relax. My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it. I can’t make new friends because of it. I don’t trust anyone because of it and I’m tired of being held back in my life. I deserve to have peace.”
In related Cudi news, the Ohio native is fresh off performing with ‘Ye at Tyler, the Creator’s annual Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles. He also has teased a new solo album, hinting that the project will drop in the new year.
