Ava Duvernay has been busy taking on the project of a lifetime and one centered around an absolute icon at that.
As reported by Variety, the director is currently working on a documentary focusing on the life of none other than Prince.
After word got out about the project, which is reportedly set to air on Netflix upon completion, Duvernay took to Twitter to comment on the exciting news.
“Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses,” the Oscar-nominated filmmaker tweeted Monday night (Oct. 29). “The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”
Known for her work on films such as Selma, A Wrinkle in Time, 13th, among others, Duvernay reportedly has the blessing of not only the late singer’s estate, but of Prince himself.
According to Deadline, prior to his passing in April 2016, the Purple One had reached out to Duvernay directly about the possibility of working together. Per Variety, the project has the full go-ahead from his estate, granting Duvernay and her team access to archival footage, photos and interviews.
According to reports, the project began production earlier this year. The forthcoming documentary is reportedly set to air in multiple parts and will cover Prince’s entire life story. At the time of this report, other details such as a working title or possible release date have not yet been confirmed.
