After building a name for himself as the de-facto leader of the beloved supergroup Migos, Quavo is looking to carve a lane as a solo artist. Friday (Oct. 12), the 27-year-old dropped his long-awaited debut solo project, Quavo Huncho.
Although the project, which spans 19 tracks, includes an array of star-studded features, fans are focusing on the possible subbing of one artist in particular: Nicki Minaj.
On the track in question, “Huncho Dreams,” Quavo appears to suggest that he has been romantically involved with Minaj, which is something that she also hinted at during her standout track “Barbie Dreams” off of her recent album Queen.
“She said I hurt her feelings 52 times,” he spits, seemingly referencing how Minaj vocalized how angry she was at Quavo and his Migos brethren for the way they handled the controversy surrounding their collaborative “MotorSport” track, which also features Cardi B.
“I love Quavo and at the time, on Twitter, I explained how MotorSport came about, and you know, people were saying that I was lying,” Nicki said, speaking on the matter during an in-depth interview with Zane Lowe earlier this summer. “So I texted Quavo and I said, ‘Hey, just, you know, could you back me up on this because I don’t want people to think I’m lying. What do I have to lie about? And he didn’t back me up…. He texted me, and he was like, ‘I would go on Twitter and back you up if you were my girl lol.’ And that hurt, because he’s somebody—I love him.”
Elsewhere throughout the track, Quavo makes a reference to “FEFE,” Minaj’s collaboration with 6ix9ine, going on to mention both the track and Minaj by name.
“Nicki (Nicki), do you love me? (Please),” Quavo rap/sings. “Why you crying? (Why?) She don’t wanna be a queen unless she got me (Queen) / She don’t wanna be on scene unless we married (On scene).”
