As one of the last remaining iconic groups in R&B history, New Edition received the most fitting honor at last night’s BET Awards as they were lionized with a Lifetime Achievement award.
After a much overdue renaissance last year, which was cemented by their acclaimed BET biopic “The New Edition Story,” and not to mention dominating for over 30 years in the music business, the legendary R&B outfit, comprised of members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant, were honored with unarguably their most deserving award yet. “I didn’t know how much our fans were going to stick with us the way our fans have stuck with us for the last 35 years,” said Bobby Brown during the group’s acceptance speech, while DeVoe noted how the group was able to survive “30-plus years in the music industry will chew you up and spit you out.”
Prior to their emotional acceptance speech, New Edition was honored with a career-spanning set performed by the young actors who played the members in the BET miniseries. Following the retrospective set, the group closed out by swooning the audience and giving a pristine reminder as to why their legacy continues to remain intact and unmatched.
