The police officer who shot and killed unarmed motorist Walter Scott from behind as he was running away will plead guilty to violating Scott’s civil rights, according to the Associated Press.
As terms of the agreement, former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager will plead guilty to violating Scott’s rights, while state prosecutors will drop a pending murder charge against him. Slager was scheduled to appear in federal court on Tuesday for motions ahead of the trial.
Slager shot Scott after a traffic stop in April 2015 in North Charleston, South Carolina. He pulled him over for a broken brake light, and Scott was fleeing from his car when Slager shot him in the back. Slager said in his police report that he feared for his life because Scott grabbed his Taser – a statement that directly contradicted video that was captured by a bystander.
Video of the shooting was viewed millions of times online, spawning outrage and controversy around the country. A five-week state trial in late 2016 on murder charges ended in a hung jury.
