Earlier today (April 18), Kendrick Lamar glued hundred of thousands of eyes onto his YouTube page thanks to the world premiere of “DNA.”

The record, which appears on the Compton lyricist’s recently released album DAMN., is one of three records produced by Mike WiLL Made It (“XXX.,” “HUMBLE.”). Over the weekend, REVOLT caught up with the superproducer during the Coachella 2017 festivities to discuss his work on what many are already calling album of the year.

According to Mike WiLL, the schizophrenic backdrop for the jumpy record was originally going to be limited to 808s. “At first [Kendrick] didn’t want it to be a beat. At first he just wanted to have 808s at certain parts, but I just made a whole beat,” he revealed. “Then I had it go around all his lyrics and whatnot.” The end result was magic.

“I felt like this beat gotta be able to be on the same level as all these bars that he’s spitting and how hard he’s going,” Mike continued. “This beat gotta have the same energy, so I just made a beat around it, right in front of him.”

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. is slated to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts next week. Industry forecasters have the album (released April 14) selling around 475,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 20.
