Last September, music industry veterans including Alicia Keys, Wyclef, and Sway all took to Twitter to bring attention to a lesser-known artist’s new project: the seven-song EP Vol. 1 from H.E.R.

But the album’s artwork featured only the singer’s silhouette, her face shrouded in shadows, and her label RCA declined to comment on her identity.

Too bad that a year earlier, Keys had taken to the same social network to share an artist named Gabi Wilson’s cover of Drake’s “Jungle.” That same cover then appeared on H.E.R’s EP and the internet was able to put two-and-two together. The secret was out.

She continued to receive attention with Bryson Tiller re-posting her “Focus” cut on SoundCloud and Dpat giving it a remix, but the singer got one of her most major co-signs this past weekend.

On Saturday (April 8), Rihanna posted to Instagram a slow-motion clip of her hair blowing in the wind. Its soundtrack? Again, none other than H.E.R’s “Focus.”

The admiration between the two artists must be mutual as H.E.R. has previously released a cover of Rihanna’s ANTi track, “Yeah, I Said It,” and she confirmed as much to The Fader yesterday (April 10), telling the publication:

“I was shocked but excited when I saw the video she made, which lowkey fits perfectly. I have always been a huge Rihanna fan, even did a cover to “Yeah, I Said It” a few months ago. I am beyond humbled that she listens to my music. The fact that she posted it was surreal. God is great!”

Here’s to hoping H.E.R. continues to get the attention she deserves. Even we at REVOLT TV included her in our Best New Acts of 2016 round-up.
