As many hip-hop fans can attest, Talib Kweli has consistently been unapologetic when it comes to his social media usage, often taking to Twitter to freely express his strong opinions and call out social injustices without hesitation.

Most recently, the hip-hop veteran and activist found himself being targeted by Jason Lee Van Dyke, with the alt-right attorney using violent and racist hate speech toward both Kweli and his fanbase.

In turn, Kweli clapped back, posting Van Dyke’s already-public business address and asking his million-plus following to hold him accountable for his hateful, racist tweets. As a result of the exchange, Kweli found himself locked out of his account by Twitter. Van Dyke’s account has since been suspended as well, thanks to Kweli and his fans’ reporting the policy-violating tweets.

“Twitter saw fit to suspend him from Twitter but they think my posting of his public business address is to incite harassment,” Kweli explained in a statement addressing the situation. “This essentially means they only care about their culpability, but they don’t care about the community this ‘lawyer’ serves in real life. A lawyer who does this should have his very public contact info shared by everyone so that we as a community can demand accountability. If someone is claiming to be a defense attorney and they are making extremely disparaging remarks, unprompted, to and about women, black people, anti fascists, gay people on top of threatening to kill these people, shouldn’t the community he serves have be able to have a place to call or an address to visit to express their grievances? If that is not the time to tell someone to contact a business, when is?”

Kweli then explained that getting back on Twitter is not his primary concern. Rather, he is concerned about Twitter’s position to say that he had harassed someone when the reality of the situation was that it was the other way around.

“There is a community outside of Twitter that the lawyer is still a threat to,” he added. “How can you not care about that community?”

As reported, employees at Twitter have told Kweli they will reinstate his account if he deletes the tweet stating Jason Lee Van Dyke’s public business information.
