Sunday evening (Nov. 19) Christina Aguilera performed a tribute set in honor of the late Whitney Houston during the 2017 American Music Awards.
As pointed out by Viola Davis, who introduced the performer, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the film The Bodyguard, of which Houston co-starred alongside Kevin Costner.
The film doubled as Houston’s acting debut and became the second-highest-grossing film worldwide in 1992, with the soundtrack later becoming the best selling of all time.
This year, the AMAs chose to dedicate a special performance in honor of the late icon and her incredible career, recruiting Aguilera to perform a medley of hits appearing on the record-breaking soundtrack. To date, Houston is the most awarded female vocalist in AMA history, earning nominations in a total of 38 categories and winning 22 of them throughout her legendary career.
To point out the absolute obvious, honoring the illustrious Whitney Houston is no easy feat, with many feeling as though Aguilera’s tribute fell tragically short. Given the nature of the internet these days, those with strong opinions absolutely didn’t do Aguilera any favors by holding back. While some appreciated her tribute efforts, the majority on Twitter is leaning in the opposite direction and absolutely going in on the singer.
