In a 2016 interview with Angie Martinez, Cam’Ron shot down the possibility of a Dipset reunion. “The show’s over,” said The Diplomats cofounder. But once again, the beloved crew comprised of Cam’Ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones and Freaky Zeeky has overcome family feuds for a Diplomatic reunion. As evidence that all is well between the Harlem collective, they unleash “Once Upon a Time.”
The Harlem collective’s latest banger mostly finds original members Cam’Ron and Jim Jones lyrically reuniting over a Heatmakerz production. Jimmy, whose verse opens the song, can be heard spitting about meetings with JAY-Z, ballin’ and New York City. Although living large and making boss moves is at the center of Killa Cam’s contributions to the track, he also manages to address a hot topic in entertainment at the moment: Harvey Weinstein.
During the filming of the cult-classic Paid in Full, the platinum rapper’s longtime friend and confidant, Dame Dash had an altercation with the infamous Hollywood producer, who has been accused of various sexual assault offenses involving over two dozen alleged victims. Cam references the incident with the lines, “No disrespecting the ladies, word from my team (why) / That’s the reason Dame smacked Harvey Weinstein (pervert) / On the set of Paid In Full, y’all gave him hell about it.”
The Diplomats released their debut album Diplomatic Immunity in spring 2003. It featured fan favorites like “Dipset Anthem” and “I Really Mean It,” and helped to cement their legacy as one of the most impactful rap groups of their era. This new track comes a week ahead of their reunion at Spotify’s RapCaviar Live concert on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Check out their new single below.
