Van Jones is a political commentator and host of CNN’s The Messy Truth with Van Jones. He’s also an author, and has written two books that have become New York Times best-sellers. Following the release of his latest book, Beyond The Messy Truth: How We Came Apart, How We Come Together, Jones stopped by The Breakfast Club.
The former special adviser to the former president Barack Obama promised Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne tha God, who drilled Jones with hard quicks, that in his attempt to identify the key issues that have seemingly forced the country to be divided, he doesn’t attempt to blame one political side or another. “Frankly, you don’t get an outcome this mess up unless both parties are way off track,” he said. “So I’m trying to give some tough love to both parties.”
He spoke on how the book urges all sides to learn how to move beyond just pointing the finger at one another. He believes that instead of just calling out who and what is wrong, we all need to be proactive in finding solutions to the issues at hand. “In the book, I point out real serious criminal justice reform that’s possible to pass,” he said.
Jones was very honest with his thoughts on President Donald Trump, who he said has “proven himself to be a horrific dumpster fire of racism and ignorance.” He was, however, appreciative of one thing Trump-related. “Thank God he’s an incompetent bigot.”
The controversy surrounding how professional athletes should protest also came up during Van Jones’ sit down with The Breakfast Club. They discussed how far off these protests are from the initial message former NFL player Colin Kaepernick was trying to bring attention to. “People forget it started out about police-community relations, police brutality – that’s what it was all about. Now it’s about free speech for athletes, it’s about the America flag. It’s about all kinds of other stuff,” said Jones.
