GoldLink has a rep for being elusive, an unfair label thrust upon artists who tend to focus on music more than fame. However, the DMV-bred rapper gives us screentime in a dual video for “Palm Trees” and “Late Night,” released Tuesday (June 28).
From the album And After That, We Didn’t Talk, “Late Night” features saxophonist and producer Masego of the Soulection collective. He also co-stars in the video, which starts at the end of a sordid weekend, then walks us backward to show how things ended up there. Imagine a Bonnie and Clyde-style double date filled with drinking, laughter…and even armed robbery.
It’s a stark contrast to the easy breezy lyrics that imagine GoldLink whisking his girl to a tropical place with no cares: “Underneath the palm trees / You can leave your worries / Listen to the waves.”
And somehow that tricky GoldLink still manages to lay low in his own video — aside from a steamy sex scene — as the focus is moreso on his beautiful accomplice.
