Jhene Aiko is keeping busy. After Big Sean announced that more music is coming from their joint TWENTY88 project, and after she recently revealed her collaboration with Teva shoes, Aiko has yet another trick up her sleeve.
In an interview with Nylon, Aiko divulged that she’s been working with applauded singer-songwriter-producer John Mayer.
She told the mag, “He’s helping me with some music. I’m a die-hard John Mayer fan—there are only, like, three people that I’m die-hard for, and he’s one of them. We met a while ago and had a session, and I was really, really sick. It was bittersweet because I couldn’t give all my energy to the session, but I knew that I had to be there because I didn’t know if it would ever happen again. So during that session, I worked on some stuff and he was like, ‘Let’s do more.’”
While we’re excited to hear what the two came up with, Aiko also hinted at an even more mysterious effort.
“I’ve been working on a special project for coming up on three years,” she said. “I’m excited to share that. It’s been a very tedious and personal thing, and it involves everything that I do. Growing up, singing was always my hobby. It was just something that I did to feel good. Whenever I was sad or mad, I would just sing about it, make up a little song about it. And I feel like writing and acting and just expressing myself have always been things that I wanted to develop as an artist, so what I’ve been working on pretty much involves everything that I feel is my passion, rolled into one.”
Aiko refused to call the project an album, and instead referred to it as an “experience” and “definitely bigger than anything” she’s done to date.
