Just two months after seeing his Southside With You film hit theaters, as his Get Lifted Film Co. served as its production company, John Legend is set to executive produce a new series, Black Wall Street.

According to Deadline, the series will focus on the development of the black middle class in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the early 20th century and the 1921 race riot that claimed hundreds of lives while aiming to stop it.

The report reads:

Set in Tulsa, OK, in the opening decades of the 20th century, ‘Black Wall Street’ examines the strong middle-class African-American community that built up in the divided city. Owning businesses and employing many whites in the segregated state, the Greenwood area of Tulsa was a haven for black professionals and raised capital for its own entrepreneurs and ventures. In May 1921, several white attackers burned the neighborhood in a two-day rampage that saw 300 die and the community devastated and largely forgotten for decades.

Legend will be joined by his Southside star Tika Sumpter, who will also executive-produce.

Black Wall Street is still developing, but could see a 2018 premiere.

And this news comes on the tail of it being reported that fellow entertainers Jay Z and Will Smith are backing a still-untitled HBO miniseries about Emmett Till.
