BROOKLYN, NY—The spotlight was on for the Afropunk movement yesterday (August 22) at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park for the first day of the annual music festival of the same name. The ladies stole the show on the green stage with performance by SZA, Lion Babe and Kelis who set the tone for the lovely Lauryn Hill and showstopping Grace Jones. Contemporary R&B superstar Kelis broadcast to fans her surprise prego belly while bopping around to classics like “Young, Fresh, and New,” “Bossy” and “Millionaire.”

L-Boogie rocked the crowd to songs from her Unplugged and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, accompanied by her band before being cut short due to a late start.

Lastly, the ’80s supermodel Grace Jones performed in true Afropunk fashion wearing nothing but body paint, a grass skirt and head dress while hula hopping to her 1985 hit song, “Slave To The Rhythm.”

If you’re into the open-minded, non-conforming and unconventional crowd you were there. The spotlight was on for the movement, which showcases Black punk artist who cater to alternative urbanites shedding light on a boldly innovative and fast growing community. The 11th annual festival garnered the evolution of old and new punk of many genres. Hip-hop artist Danny Brown performed along with hardcore punk groups Death Grip and Suicidal Tendancies.

Afropunk celebrates Day 2 of festivities today with performances by rock legend Lenny Kravitz, blues band Vintage Trouble, Raury and Kaytranda.
