On this wonderful hump day, REVOLT brings you the exclusive premiere of the second chapter of Amerigo Gazaway's Yasiin Gaye project: a delectable, intricate blend of Mos Def and Marvin Gaye's finest work. Stream and download the album via BandCamp here.
Shifting focus for the project's second installment, Gazaway aims to highlight the often-overlooked accomplishments of Marvin Gaye's role as a producer. Of the collection's focus, the DJ-producer had this to say:
"I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin's original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other arttists--such as Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc., and re-present those classic Mos Def verses in new context."
The first Yasiin Gaye project, though released for free, was brought down due to copyright claim. To shed light on their copyright battles (and the urgent need for reform), Amerigo and his Soul Mates team connected with New Yorker magazine cartoonist Drew Dernavich, who created the satirical visuals for the latest album's artwork. The piece features Mos Def and Marvin Gaye aboard a spaceship piloted by none other than Amerigo himself. [Fun fact, and maybe a subtle reference here: Kanye West's "Spaceship" samples a Marvin Gaye song.]
When you download the album, you will also receive the stellar bonus track: "Ms. Fat Booty Pt. II" featuring Ghostface Killah.
